Ideal for indoor and outdoor activities, the compact PENTAX Optio W60 is suited for winter and summer travel, particularly in and around water, mud, and sand

If your summer holidays are off the beaten track or you enjoy a dip in the ocean at a sunny beach, this new digital camera could be for you. Pentax are set to release a new compact digital camera perfect for this summer’s outdoor adventures. With improved waterproofing and dust sealing this rugged compact digital camera can go places others cannot.

The Optio W60 allows users to capture images at new aquatic depths. Improved design and construction of the shutter button and controls and reinforced, airtight joints, makes the Optio W60 suitable for underwater photography up to 30 percent deeper than previous PENTAX waterproof models. In addition to the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) Class 8 waterproofing standard, the camera is JIS Class 5 dustproof against dirt, sand and dust and operates in extreme temperatures as cold as 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 degrees Celsius).

Fewer Vacation Worries

A holiday should be a relaxing time and Pentax’s W60 takes away many of the worries when taking a camera wet or dusty holiday destinations because the W60 is compact and sealed. The kids can use the W60 at the beach without any worries about dropping it in the sand or a rock pool.

Creative Possibilities

Rather than boring friends and colleagues with the same boring holiday snaps get something different with the W60. Compact digital cameras lack the lenses to take good pictures of surf from the beach, with W60 you can capture the majesty and power out in the waves.

Going snorkeling on a coral reef? Take the W60 along and capture all the color and shapes of these fantastic natural underwater constructions. The enhanced design of the Optio W60 allows the camera to operate up to 13 feet underwater for two hours.

Trekking in the wilds or mountains is also Pentax W60 country. Get caught in a sudden rain shower, cross streams or boggy areas without having to worry about keeping your camera dry and capture the experience. If fly-fishing is your passion, then carry a W60 in your waders and gather photographic evidence of your catch.

Mud And Dust

While the W60 will survive these conditions, it will come home caked in mud or dust. Cleaning, well just wash it in some water, maybe with a little bit of mild detergent to remove that stubborn grime. How many cameras reviews include washing instructions?

Underwater Tip

Underwater light refracts at the boundary between air and water. The bent appearance of an object half dipped into a glass of water is an example of this effect. Because of this, the same zoom setting on land results in a narrower field of view underwater. To shoot wide angles, you would shoot the subject from a slightly greater distance than you would on land. The W60 incorporates a Digital Wide function to merge two shots into one image for ultra-wide-angle image capture (equivalent to a focal length of 21mm in 35mm format). In addition, when the Capture mode is set to Underwater, the Optio waterproof camera alters its White balance setting to compensate for color shifts underwater.

Image Quality

The Optio W60 offers good image quality specifications for a compact digital camera in its price range. A 10 megapixel sensor with and ISO capability of down to 6400 promises good resolution and the sensitivity to help capture images underwater.

The W60 comes with a 5X optical zoom refraction lens covering focal lengths from 5mm to 25mm (approximately 28mm to 140mm in 35mm format). This range of focal lengths makes the W60 suitable for a wide variety of scenes, including expansive landscapes, architecture, and group photos in confined spaces as well as close-up telephoto shots of subjects.

The Optio W60 is a good all round digital camera with a High-Quality Movie mode featuring HD resolution up to 1280 x 720 pixels. A host of focusing aids such as fast Face Recognition, Smile Capture, Blink Detection, an Underwater Movie mode. The LCD monitor is designed for outdoor use with an Anti-Reflection coating to reduce glare.

The PENTAX Optio W60 will be available in July 2008 for US $329.95 in a choice of two colors: Ocean Blue and Silver. More information is available here:
